Learn More. Author's Note: I've spent nearly 20 years in adult education, 13 of those helping to found and run The Literacy Project, a community based adult literacy program in western Massachusetts. Much of this section and the next is based on personal experience, and most of the examples are out of my own work. In general, my prejudices in this area run to collaborative management and to the concept of adult literacy as an extremely broad endeavor which embraces education, learner empowerment, and social change.
This is also known as being functionally illiterate. Many adults are reluctant to admit to their literacy difficulties and ask for help. One of the most important aspects of supporting adults with low literacy levels is to increase their self-esteem and persuade them of the benefits of improving their reading and writing. We work with the Booker Prize Foundation and National Prison Radio to engage prisoners and increase their enjoyment and frequency of reading through our Books Unlocked programme. The project will provide education and self help initiatives to women age 18 and above, who had left school because of social, cultural and economic reasons. In Africa majority of the poor are women and they experience vulnerability and powerlessness to a much higher degree than men, the situation is even worse in rural communities, where women's rights are violated by cultural practices, equitable access to education and the autonomy to receive and produce the information relevant to their concerns and perspectives are therefore critical issues for them. The project will provide education and self help initiatives to women of age 18 and above, who because of cultural, economic and social reasons dropped out of school and could not pursue their dreams.
